Description
The field of psychotherapy is burgeoning and many novel treatment approaches are appearing in the literature. This book provides an overview of major psychotherapy approaches and their varied uses to treat psychopathology.
Purpose
The three main goals of this book are to provide a comprehensive overview of evidence-based psychotherapy; to integrate psychotherapy in the research literature with its real-world clinical uses; and to make the book accessible to students from multiple disciplines, while also making it useful as an advanced reference for experienced clinicians.
Audience
This book is intended for practitioners and students in the fields of psychology, psychiatry, counseling, and social work. The editors are some of the most respected psychotherapy researchers and clinicians in the field and the contributing author list is an international cohort that contains unparalleled experts like Tim Beck and Theodore Millon.
Features
The first section is an introduction to 10 psychotherapeutic approaches, and the two remaining sections detail the use of psychotherapy for psychiatric disorders and for personality disorders. These sections cover these approaches as they apply to the entire lifespan, special populations, and special topics. For each of the approaches, the major premises and theories are covered and treatment principles and relevant research are included. Although not a comprehensive guide to delivering therapy, there are some examples of the tools used in the approaches to give readers an idea of what the treatment involves. Each of the chapters on a specific disorder contains information about the major symptoms to be treated, the use of different approaches, and the research behind each approach. Case examples are provided in some chapters to help illustrate key points. The special topics that conclude the book are succinct, and yet seem to cover the major issues and refer readers to worthwhile resources for more information. A wealth of references ends each chapter and the index is thorough.
Assessment
The editors began with not one, but three lofty goals and they succeed at all three. To have this immense amount of information at your fingertips is a precious commodity, but to have it current, evidence-based, and easy-to-reference is beyond reckoning. The book will be invaluable for clinicians as a reference to the myriad therapeutic possibilities and their specific benefits for various disorders. Make room on your bookshelf for this one or, better yet, clear a space on your desk to have it close at hand.
