Description
This is the second edition of a comprehensive textbook on venous disease that was originally published in 2007. It is well written and edited by internationally renowned venous experts, and covers the whole spectrum of the disease from molecular mechanisms to treatment options of various venous conditions.
Purpose
The book's purpose is to be the reference source for all of the important topics in venous disease based on expert opinion and evidence-based research.
Audience
This book is fantastic for anyone interested in venous disease. It is detailed enough to serve as a reference for experienced surgeons treating patients with venous disease, but easy to follow for students who just got started in the field.
Features
The first of the book's five sections covers the fundamentals of venous disease such as embryology, anatomy, epidemiology, physiology, and pathophysiology. The first chapter on the history of venous disease includes illustrations by Vesalius and other early famous experts. There are many pictures and diagrams in addition to detailed descriptions in the chapters in section two that demonstrate the work-up and treatment of superficial venous insufficiency. Section three concentrates on the multiple facets of venous thromboembolism, including risk assessment, prophylaxis, treatment, and complications. Examples of risk assessment tools and recommended prophylactic regimens are those used by many hospitals in the world. Section four focuses on chronic venous insufficiency, and the last section is a short but inclusive chapter on congenital venous malformations.
Assessment
This continues to be the go-to book for venous disease. This second edition is complete with up-to-date, evidence-based information on medical therapy, minimally invasive and surgical procedures, and other aspects of treatment. The tables, diagrams, illustrations, and photographs make for a very helpful addendum to the detailed but easy-to-read text. This is a must-read for vascular trainees who might not get much exposure to venous disease in their training programs. And it should be included in libraries of anyone taking care of patients with venous disease.
