Description
This book offers a thoughtful look at means of addressing significant hazards arising from work and extending in presence and consequence throughout the community. The seventh edition builds on previous strengths, emphasizing climate change, pediatric environmental health, liver and kidney injury, and certain global perspectives.
Purpose
Beyond noting changes ranging from global warming health issues to the recognition of new work hazards, the authors have produced a 750-page volume suitable for both the practice setting and the classroom.
Audience
This book is recommended for physicians and nurses as well as for public health practitioners and those in industrial hygiene, safety, ergonomics, and environmental health.
Features
Similar to previous editions, this one is organized into five major sections covering work, environment and health; recognition, assessment, and prevention; hazardous exposures; adverse health effects; and an integrated approach to prevention. Using the section on adverse health effects as an example, the book has been updated in terms of new and expanded treatments (injuries, by Castillo et al.; musculoskeletal disorders, Harris-Adamson et al.; cancer, Ward, respiratory disorders; North and Christiani; neurological disorders, Bleecker; reproductive disorders, Frazier; skin disorders, Tapp and Lushniak; cardiovascular disorders, Roseman; liver disorders, Levy; and kidney disorders, Weaver et al.
Assessment
Given the seven years since the sixth edition, the current book includes new material in important areas. Beyond its carefully crafted text, it features Earl Dotter photographs and the superb drawings of Nick Thorkelson. This book has not disappointed in the past, and the seventh edition is a considerable contribution.
