Description
This thorough review of basic neuromuscular disorders uses a question-and-answer format akin to an online question bank, accompanied by video demonstrations of the disorders, which are very helpful as diagnosis is made on clinical examination. The table of contents clearly labels many neuromuscular conditions that are routinely seen in the hospital and clinic. Almost every explanation is supported by an up-to-date reference. The first edition was published in 2015, and this edition includes updates on various disorders.
Purpose
The purpose is to provide an updated reference on various neuromuscular disorders. This book is a necessity for residents as it highlights common neuromuscular disorders that are seen in hospital and clinic, yet can be hard to identify. It also does an excellent job linking the condition with the associated disease. The video demonstrations highlight the main points of each condition and how it connects to the disease process.
Audience
The intended audience is neurology practitioners, particularly those in residency and/or medical school. Rather than focusing on very rare conditions, the book covers the most common physical exam findings and demonstrates how they relate to specific neuromuscular disorders. The book helpfully summarizes key exam findings and how they relate to medical conditions. The book is appropriately written for this audience with the answers providing detailed explanations of thought processes for diagnosing the various conditions. The author is a well-respected expert in neuromuscular neurology who has worked in the field for many years, and his knowledge base is demonstrated in this book.
Features
The book covers different physical exam findings that are associated with neuromuscular disorders, using a question-and-answer format similar to standardized tests that residents take. In particular, the sections on hyperreflexia and numbness are well done as these are two common exam findings that can be associated with many conditions. The video demonstrations of patients are also excellent resources. The book does not have a section on correlating EMG findings with these exam findings, which would be useful for residents.
Assessment
This is useful for residents and medical students who are interested in, or practice, neurology. It highlights common physical exam findings that are associated with neuromuscular disorders, and is a great introductory resource for the field. The second edition is warranted as there are many more exam findings that can be covered. This book should be available to all neurology programs.
