Description
This succinct review starts with a chapter on the neurological examination and diagnostic testing, proceeds with chapters on the most common neurological complaints, and ends with chapters on the most common neuropathologies. Structuring the chapters with tables and diagrams makes this book an excellent resource for bedside reference. The first edition was published 2008.
Purpose
The purpose is to provide an introduction to the approach to common to neurological problems. It also acts a guide for beginners in the neurological examination and diagnostic testing. I would have loved to own this book when I started my residency in neurology.
Audience
The audience is beginners in neurology such as students, residents, and clinicians at the start of their careers. As a tertiary care center, Mayo Clinic sees a wide range of neuropathologies, and as a clinical educator there, the author is a credible authority.
Features
Designed for beginners, this book provides instruction on how to obtain a history and perform an examination. It also walks readers through how to approach the most common neurological complaints and pathologies. The best aspects of this book are its tables and figures, which make it easy to refer to while on the wards. The most unique feature is the access to online videos which give beginners an idea of what they should except to see with classical neurological clinical findings. A few pages or tables dedicated to autoimmune encephalitis, which has been getting attention lately, would have been a welcome addition.
Assessment
I would highly recommend this book to any clinician who deals with patients with neurological problems and is looking for a place to start. The book is excellent and a must for every neurology beginner's bookshelf. It is on a par with several other titles, such as The Little Black Book of Neurology, 5th edition, Zaidat and Lerner (Elsevier, 2008), The Massachusetts General Hospital Handbook of Neurology, 2nd edition, Flaherty and Rost (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2007), and The Washington Manual Neurology Survival Guide, Rengachary (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2004), but much more current.
