Purpose A review of pathophysiology is provided with discussion of procedures, disease states, and management strategies. Audience Practitioners and senior trainees are an appropriate audience for this work. While editorial leadership comes from the University of Chicago, leaders from the critical care community throughout North America provide substantial input. Features The 112 chapters are organized along traditional lines, beginning with an overview of organizational issues, general management strategies and an approach to critical care problems based on organ system patterns of presentation. Additional sections address the needs of the surgical patient both in high-risk, non-trauma situations and the specific challenges posed by the injured patient. Concluding chapters review recent developments in toxicology, critical illness in pregnancy, and morbid obesity. Chapters are well written and extensively referenced. Black-and-white illustrations and reproductions of radiographs are of inconsistent quality. References date to within one year of publication and focus on original work. A detailed table of contents groups chapters by subject heading and provides authorship. An exhaustive index of over 70 pages provides separate references for figures and tables. Assessment This is one of the leading textbooks in the field. With expansion in authorship and inclusion of new material, particularly on sepsis, delirium, ventilator-associated lung injury, bioterrorism, and disaster management, it is comparable to the recently released Textbook of Critical Care, 5th edition, edited by Fink, Abraham, Vincent and Kochanek (Elsevier, 2005). Important issues that receive scattered or incomplete discussion include compartment syndromes and management of the transplant patient. This is one of the core texts in our critical care training program.
