Description
This is the eighth edition of the original Schwartz textbook in surgery. This update of current surgery has a new editor as well.
Purpose
The purpose is to give a panoramic view of surgery and all of the subspecialties.
Audience
It is aimed at a sophisticated audience, including residents and practicing surgeons.
Features
This book contains a complete view of the domain of surgery and includes both common and uncommon disorders. There are 46 chapters; the first 14 deal with basic principles in surgery; the next 23 deal with specific organs and the diseases which occur in them; the next seven deal with the surgical subspecialties; and the last two deal with surgery in the elderly and anesthetic considerations for surgery. Each chapter starts with a basic outline and then develops the theme extensively, including a discussion about the overall scope of the disease, from the pathophysiology to diagnosis to management. At the end of each chapter are numerous references. The book has many line drawings, tables, diagrams, photographs and radiographs. Staging tables and other methods to classify diseases are included.
Assessment
This book accomplishes its goal of providing a comprehensive view of surgery. The chapter on burns is current and very well written. It is technical enough to understand the concepts but interesting enough to maintain the reader's interest. There is an excellent basic science discussion that helped clarify the clinical problems. Clearly, this chapter could function as a complete reference for a surgeon in training who wanted to know about burns. The chapter on sarcoma management was very well written with an excellent description of GI stomal tumors and the important clinical trials that are both ongoing and completed. The diagrams and tables are excellent. This is an excellent textbook that conveys a complete view of surgery and accomplishes the goals set out by the authors very successfully.
