Description
This is a quick reference for the most common procedures required in clinical practice.
Purpose
The purpose is to provide up-to-date information on procedures, the equipment, preparation, special considerations including potential adverse reactions, patient teaching, and documentation.
Audience
The audience appears to be practicing nurses or students.
Features
Procedures are presented in alphabetical order making it easy to find material. Each procedure is broken down into an overview, equipment, key steps, special considerations which may be an age alert or a warning to indicate a need to watch the patient closely, complications, patient teaching including discharge instructions, and documentation. Each procedure is followed by a few select references. Illustrations help the reader understand the procedure, but they do not accompany every procedure. Some, such as knee extension therapy, could benefit from an illustration.
Assessment
There are several procedures books on the market, such as another Lippincott Williams & Wilkins book, Best Practices: Evidence-Based Nursing Procedures, 2nd edition (2007). Best Practices is based on evidence to support the procedures, a strength that is either lacking or not stressed in this procedures book. This is a quick reference for any nurse or student wanting to learn or refresh on a procedure. Evidence to support the procedures would strengthen the book.
