Purpose It is intended as a teaching tool and reference guide for students and pharmacy practitioners hoping to incorporate evidence-based medicine into their daily practice. The book meets the author's objectives of providing a road map for clinicians to follow to find and evaluate evidence-based medicine. However, it does not meet its objective of helping clinicians apply the results of their evidence-based medicine query to the specific care of individual patients. Audience According to the author, the book is written for students and current practitioners (both pharmacists and other healthcare practitioners). I believe the book is appropriate for students and healthcare practitioners who have minimal experience or exposure to incorporating evidence-based recommendations into their daily practice. Although the authors seem to have the necessary background for addressing the process of finding and interpreting the evidence, it is not apparent what their experience is in applying this to specific patients. Features The book presents a step-by-step process for providing evidence-based pharmacotherapy. The chapters walk readers through the process, starting with identifying the issue, then finding and interpreting the literature, and, finally, applying it to practice and formulary decisions. It does an excellent job of providing specific examples and many visuals to aid the reader. Several tables summarize drug information resources, which is very helpful. The table summarizing the key journals in selected areas is an excellent tool for students/practitioners who are new to the process and are unsure of what types of journals and references are reputable. The chapter on how to make pharmacotherapy decisions using a decision-analytic framework is an excellent review for practitioners making decisions on a large scale (i.e. formulary decisions), but it is not very helpful in advising readers how to apply the evidence they have acquired and interpreted to an individual patient. It is not a practical tool to be used on a daily basis for patient-specific pharmacotherapy decisions. This is the biggest shortcoming of the book - the step at which the evidence-based decision is applied to an individual patient is missing. Assessment This would be an excellent resource for all pharmacy students and practitioners who are unfamiliar with or need more guidance in providing evidence-based pharmacotherapy recommendations. The book provides a very comprehensive and methodological approach to providing evidence-based pharmacotherapy. In particular, it provides a thorough summary of all resources available for drug information.
