Description
This overview of assessments used by occupational therapists practicing in the area of mental health provides an overview and background, administration procedures, case examples, and a summary of the research associated with each assessment. The first edition was published in 1999.
Purpose
The purpose is to present assessments in mental health that have been developed or are in the process of being developed by occupational therapists. The information on each assessment includes the theoretical base, administration procedures, a case example, statistical analysis/recent studies, and suggestions for future research. Given the increasing need for therapists to ground their practice in evidence-based evaluation and intervention, this is a much needed and valuable resource. Information throughout the book is presented in a consistent manner, meeting the objectives.
Audience
This book is intended for occupational therapists with a wide range of experience. It is useful for students being introduced to the evaluation process in occupational therapy. It is also a valuable resource for practicing therapists who are looking for new assessments to use in their practice or in need of evidence to support the use of the assessments they currently use. Dr. Hemphill is well respected in the field of occupational therapy, especially in the area of assessments employed in the field of mental health practice. She first presented a collection of mental health assessments 25 years ago in the first edition of the Evaluation Process in Psychiatric Occupational Therapy. Dr. Hemphill brings together a group of well respected and knowledgeable authors in both academic and clinical practice for this book.
Features
The assessments in this book reflect the domains of practice outlined in the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework. They are useful in gathering information for an occupational profile as well as an analysis of occupational performance. Readers can familiarize themselves with assessments related to areas of occupation, performance skills, performance patterns, context/environment, and client factors. In addition to the inclusion of long-standing assessments such as the Bay Area Functional Performance Evaluation and the Comprehensive Occupational Therapy Evaluation, this book presents information about newly developed assessments such as the OT-Quest and assessments used with the newly developed Role Development Guidelines. The case examples are especially helpful. These cases help readers understand how the assessments can be applied to the clinical setting. Another helpful feature is the inclusion of visual samples of many of the assessments. These samples help readers get a better understanding of the assessments and whether they would be useful in their particular setting. One limitation is the exclusion of how to obtain these assessments. Although this information may be included in the reference section of each chapter, it would be beneficial to have it more prominently included at the end of each chapter.
Assessment
This is a valuable resource for mental health practitioners. It provides an excellent collection of assessments that can be used in a variety of settings and with a variety of ages. Because there are limited books related to evaluation and assessment in mental health occupational therapy, Dr. Hemphill's revision, with updated information on existing assessments and an introduction to new and developing assessments, is greatly appreciated.
