Description
This book presents a series of classic case studies and a step-by-step approach to preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative anesthesia considerations. This edition separates out the pediatric cases for the first time, and also has extended its field of authors to include some outside the Weill-Columbia system.
Purpose
It is designed to facilitate the organized study of cases in preparation for the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) oral examination and is intended primarily for trainees and those in the process of obtaining ABA certification. This approach differs from that of the standard textbook, and is a welcome and wonderful supplement to training. The question-and-answer format is the ideal way to teach for the boards, as it represents the reality of the oral examination.
Audience
The book is intended for trainees in anesthesiology, although Dr. Yao notes that it can be useful for those seeking recertification (which is currently by written examination only). Junior residents can benefit from the approach and style of the question and answer format; more senior residents will surely read into the details of each case and lengthy discussions. The senior editors are among the best-known educators and writers in the field, and they have true authority.
Features
Basic and complex cases are covered from the preoperative evaluation and testing to the intraoperative management of routine and critical situations. Postanesthetic management is covered, with a focus on complications. Each discussion incorporates the references, rather than putting them at the end of the chapter, which makes it easier to navigate. The cases are organized by organ system, except the pediatric cases, which are grouped separately. There are very few illustrations, and more might have been helpful (e.g. cardiac valves/echocardiograms).
Assessment
This is an outstanding book. The discussions are succinct and easy to read. The style appears to be exactly what is expected in the oral portion of the ABA examination. Accordingly, this will be helpful to anyone in the certification process. The seventh edition, along with its online version (accessible in its entirety from anywhere), is a most worthwhile component of the anesthesiology trainee's library.
