Description
This is the third edition of a book that seeks to make a connection between research and evidence-based practice.
Purpose
No purpose is explicitly stated, but the author notes, "This book is offered to assist nursing students in acquiring the knowledge required to engage in evidence-based practice, which includes basic knowledge about research methods and knowledge about how to incorporate credible research evidence into practice."
Audience
The intended audience is nursing students.
Features
The book is divided into two parts, one on nursing research and the other on evidence-based practice, but the majority of the book discusses research. Although this part uses exemplars to aid understanding, they are not particularly helpful and, in fact, I found them confusing. I expected them to explain the research discussed, but I could not see a connection between the material in the chapter and the exemplars. The chapter on qualitative research addresses only two methods, but contains a table that describes three methods. However, the appendixes and the glossary are extremely informative.
Assessment
This is the first book I've encountered with the stated purpose of showing a connection between research and practice. The research books I've seen have attempted to incorporate some information about evidence-based practice. Because this book has a section on evidence-based practice, it is needed; however, the research section is disappointing.
