Description
This book provides an updated, systematic description of human development before birth.
Purpose
The purpose is to help medical, dental, and other students in the health sciences not only understand human embryology and pass exams, but also be well prepared for a career in patient care, research, and/or teaching.
Audience
The authors have received multiple awards for excellence in medical/dental, graduate, and undergraduate teaching.
Features
The book presents a logical approach to studying embryology. Initial chapters cover human development as it progresses across time. Subsequent chapters discuss specific organ systems and regions. Final chapters highlight common birth defects and signaling pathways. Particularly helpful in understanding concepts are the numerous well-designed, multicolor diagrams and corresponding photomicrographs, gross photos, and radiological studies. A small number of animations are available online, which greatly help in the understanding of the three-dimensional aspects of embryological development. Particularly captivating is the inclusion of common birth defects and their etiologies, not only in one of the final chapters, but throughout the book.
Assessment
This is an excellent study guide for medical, dental, or other health science students. The ninth edition includes numerous color diagrams, gross photographs, diagnostic images, and a small but captivating set of three-dimensional animations, which help make a difficult topic easier to understand.
