Description
This third edition of a medical terminology book now includes over 300 color photographs and drawings, a CD-ROM study guide, chapter updates, and a 68-page glossary/index. This is an update of the 2003 edition.
Purpose
By showing the way that medical terms fit together, the author seeks to give learners the skills needed to effectively read and interpret medical reports and charts. The revisions in this edition make this a valuable and comprehensive resource.
Audience
Although not specifically stated, the book is geared towards college-level healthcare programs, but anyone interested in the language of healthcare would benefit.
Features
The book is logically organized into 24 chapters that are grouped into two main sections: terminology and body sections. Each chapter begins with chapter content and key competencies followed by an overview section. The first four chapters introduce readers to word building rules, prefixes, suffixes, and whole body terminology. The remaining 20 chapters focus on the body systems, anatomy and physiology, and vocabulary and word elements. Full color illustrations next to definitions help reinforce learning. Pathological conditions, diagnostic tests and procedures, and common abbreviations are detailed next. The author provides detailed definitions and illustrations of each of the conditions and tests. Each term is accompanied by its correct pronunciation and a clear definition. The author uses simple to complex definitions, with the basic definition is in bold and the more complex discussion is in regular type. Every chapter ends with written and audio reviews and review exercises. The CD contains further spelling and audio quizzing and audio/visual animations which help reinforce the material in the book.
Assessment
This update is well written and logically organized and compares favorably with other medical terminology books. This is an excellent text for healthcare students and would prove a worthy resource for public, college, and university libraries as well.
