Description
This book, part of the FASTtrack series, provides readers with a handy and useful guide to preparing accurate and effective pharmaceutical compounds and extemporaneous preparations.
Purpose
It is designed to be a summary of key points behind the preparation and manufacturing of key common extemporaneous dosage forms that pharmacists still may encounter in practice. These are worthy objectives, because even though most drugs are prepared in manufactured dosage forms, there still are occasions where pharmacists need to compound a dosage form. This book is a handy reference for these times.
Audience
This is certainly written for students of pharmacy, but it is also useful for working pharmacists as a handy reference when they need to recall how to prepare/compound different dosage forms. The authors are pharmacists from the United Kingdom who also work in academia.
Features
The book begins with a nice introduction to terminology and history of compounding, and then highlights the preparation techniques of the most common extemporaneous dosage forms, such as solutions, suspensions, emulsions, ointments, creams, powders, capsules, and suppositories. What is especially appealing is the way each chapter highlighting a dosage form follows a set template that includes the use of the product, safety, how to calculate the formula for preparation, the methods of preparation, choice of container and labeling requirements, and advice to the patient upon dispensing. Calculation examples and self assessment questions are a nice feature, particularly for pharmacy students.
Assessment
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It certainly refreshed my memory of these topics from pharmacy school and it serves to remind us as pharmacists that this still is part of the job, albeit much less frequently. Because these preparations are traditional dosage forms, it would be unlikely that frequent updates of this book would be necessary.
