Description
Histology is the science of microscopic anatomy. Mastery of this material enables students to understand biological and physiological processes, and provides an essential foundation for pathologic aspects of disease. This updated sixth edition includes illuminating text, colorful illustrations, carefully annotated photomicrographs, and clinical correlations. Its 25 chapters cover traditional topics in histology from an overview of tissues to special sensory organs. The focus is on histology, cell biology, biochemistry, and medical physiology.
Purpose
According to the editors, the aim is to provide students with a "textual and visual introduction to histology with correlative cell biology." This book is crafted to "allow students to become familiar with the latest information, and be able to practically apply newfound knowledge."
Audience
It is written for students of medicine, dentistry, nursing, and the allied health professions. Undergraduates in the biomedical life sciences also will appreciate this book.
Features
This updated and revised edition is a joy to read. The pages are filled with beautiful illustrations, amazing full-color photomicrographs, and useful tables. The text is color-coded to help students navigate. Key terms are in red, while clinical correlations and the latest research findings are in blue. Each chapter includes an overview, discussion of biological structure and function, "folders" of high-yield clinical correlations, and richly-annotated microscopic plates. The text is brimming with details. The illustrations and photomicrographs are outstanding. The figure legends include bold and italicized font to enable rapid identification of key morphologic features. Thumbnails provide guidance and orientation. Ancillary online learning resources include access to a searchable e-book and use of a powerful interactive atlas.
Assessment
This is a wonderful learning resource for students of medicine and the life sciences. The authors combine traditional topics in histology with modern research findings in cell biology and medical physiology. The book is comprehensive, clinically relevant, and up to date. It is well-organized and visually attractive. The quality of the tissue photomicrographs and electron micrographs is outstanding. The editors and authors clearly have a keen sense of how students learn. This combined text and atlas provides the information that students need to know to understand the foundations of clinical medicine and succeed on licensing examinations. Students will learn to appreciate the incredible beauty and diversity of cells in the human body.
