Description
Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most frequent causes of consultation in a rheumatology practice. Its treatment can be controversial, since more selective NSAIDs are now available on the market. This book addresses appropriately all the possible therapeutic strategies, along with pros and cons. It also discusses the most recent trials for treatment of OA and addresses the concerns that rheumatologists had when these trials were first available. It uses excellent tables and illustrations for the procedures.
Purpose
The author has designed this book to be used not only by rheumatologists, but also by other physicians such as orthopedists and internists. For this purpose, the book is well written in easy to understand language. The author also intended to provide an update in the field, and that objective has been met in the treatment section.
Audience
It makes sense to target other physicians in addition to rheumatologists because OA is a disease that frequently is not treated by a rheumatologist. The authors are well known authorities in the field.
Features
The book covers all the pertinent topics in OA, including epidemiology, clinical presentation, biologic bases, diagnostic methods, and all types of treatment available, including alternative medicine. Excellent tables and explanatory graphics are used for procedures. I appreciate how the author approaches the controversial topics from a very neutral position.
Assessment
It was important to update the previous edition (written 8 years ago), since new therapeutic strategies are now available for the treatment of OA.
