Description
This is a review of surgical procedures from the perspectives of both anesthesiologists and surgeons, divided into surgical subspecialties and further into sections on major/common surgical procedures in that subspecialty (e.g. neurosurgery has a section on craniotomy for tumor, among others).
Purpose
The purpose is to provide clinically relevant information about a wide variety of surgical procedures. It is helpful to have such a resource when taking care of a patient for a procedure with which a clinician is unfamiliar or has not done recently.
Audience
Anesthesiologists are the intended audience, and students, residents, and faculty can all benefit from the book. The authors clearly state that this is not meant to be a textbook of surgery or anesthesia, but rather a source of important clinical information about specific procedures. This is a wonderful resource for new trainees in anesthesiology, providing a useful foundation of the surgical considerations as well as the anesthetic considerations involved in procedures that are new to them.
Features
The procedures in each of the subspecialties cover surgical considerations (with positioning, typical blood loss, complications, etc.) and anesthetic considerations (preoperative, intraoperative, monitoring, etc.). A table summarizes both the surgical and anesthetic aspects of the procedure. This edition includes more color (both the tables and the illustrations), which makes it an even easier read.
Assessment
For new trainees, this book is a must have. I make this mandatory reading (along with a basic anesthesia textbook) for the residents I tutor at the beginning of their anesthesia training so they can familiarize themselves with surgical procedures and some of the anesthetic considerations. Even for experienced practitioners, it serves as an excellent resource for recall of aspects of a surgical procedure for which they have not provided anesthesia recently. This edition continues the book's strong tradition and is easier to read with the increased use of color.
