There are only a few black and white pictures, but the many tables, charts, and examples add interest.. Purpose The authors state, "Anyone who interacts with culturally diverse patients and families needs to learn transcultural communication principles and techniques." The purpose of this text is to lead the serious student through the process of learning these skills. This is a worthy objective especially with the growth of diversity encountered in healthcare. Audience This text "is designed for all health care providers and students in the helping professionsThis practical book, although focused on nursing practice, has content that is highly relevant to the practice of all helping professionals. . ." I agree with the authors' stated audience. Both authors are well qualified and credible. Both have actual experience working with diverse populations. Features "This book discusses how transcultural communication concepts and principles are important in gathering assessment data, developing culturally appropriate nursing diagnoses, and implementing quality care." The book is packed with summary tables, examples from real situations, and self-evaluation exercises. Many of the Institute of Medicine's report recommendations and guidelines from the Department of Health and Human Services on Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Standards are incorporated in the text. Assessment This text is great. The examples included are worth the price of the book. The "Communication Consideration" boxes are right on target and are scattered throughout the text. This book would make a great reference but it would be perfect to build a specific cultural diversity course around.
