Description
This book describes the history and theory behind cultural competency and cultural diversity and then covers five major cultural groups and their unique healthcare needs.
Purpose
The purpose is to provide a resource on cultural diversity and cultural competence for nurses at all educational levels to enable them to individualize care and address the unique needs of any given patient. The author refers to it as a "one stop shop."
Audience
The audience includes nursing students at all educational levels from the associate degree to the DNP, as well as practicing nursing professionals.
Features
This book is meant to serve as a framework and structure to help readers bolster their knowledge in cultural competency. Each chapter begins with objectives, and the chapters on particular racial/ethnic or cultural groups include case studies, key terms, and definitions. Pertinent research studies are also included, with review questions ending each chapter. A glossary and an appendix that identifies Muslim health beliefs and health practices end the book.
Assessment
This is a comprehensive, handy resource on the various barriers different cultural groups encounter when seeking and/or obtaining healthcare as well as information on nursing care for the various racial/ethnic and cultural groups. It is filled with tables of interesting statistics on demographics and immigration as well.
