Description
This is the colossal, 20-pound, third edition of THE reference for a dermatologist's library regardless of dermatologic specialty. Virtually every aspect of dermatology is covered from medical to surgical to cosmetic topics.
Purpose
It is intended as a comprehensive dermatology reference. It definitely achieves its purpose.
Audience
The audience is all dermatologists and dermatology residents.
Features
There are hundreds of excellent color clinical photographs, shaded summary tables, and key points that are summarized and highlighted in one sentence throughout the two volumes of this textbook. The book has been thoughtfully organized. For example, sharp color photographs of histology are juxtaposed with clinical photographs. There are excellent tables of differential diagnoses and tips for differentiating similarly appearing entities. Every condition is discussed following a prescribed outline: epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, pathology, differential diagnosis, and treatment. Basic science is discussed apropos to the specific disease pathology. However, I did not find a clear section discussing the recently described autoinflammatory disorders when searching the index.
Assessment
This is an absolutely superb reference. Most of what you will want to know about a particular disease is here with current information including pertinent genetic mechanisms gone awry. There is also helpful information on medications commonly prescribed in dermatology that includes risks and appropriate monitoring. I recommend you eliminate the various books you have accumulated on general dermatology over the years and replace it with just this two-volume monster. It's all you really need!
