Description
This is a series of case presentations based upon the experience of hospitalists over the last seven years from the Society of Hospital Medicine.
Purpose
The purpose of gathering these cases was to publish them in the Journal of Hospital Medicine to help challenge the diagnostic skills of the journal's readers.
Audience
These cases are for every clinician who has the opportunity to care for patients admitted to an inpatient setting and for those in training who anticipate a hospital-centered practice of medicine. The editors and contributors are all leading experts in their fields and practicing physicians.
Features
The 22 cases are presented in a step-wise manner, similar to morning report. As the preface notes, this format allows readers to formulate their own hypothesis and differential diagnosis and compare their thoughts to that of an expert discussant unfamiliar with the case. The cases are truly challenging and extraordinarily interesting, resulting in a book that demands thought.
Assessment
This book and this format are exceptional. It pushes readers in a way they have not usually experienced since their training days. It is challenging and refreshing at the same time. Congratulations to the editors for bringing a new perspective to life-long learning.
