Description
This is a science-based guide to the clinical application of therapeutic modalities for student physical therapists. This edition is a follow-up to Therapeutic Modalities for Physical Therapists (McGraw-Hill, 2002).
Purpose
The intended purpose is to present the theoretical basis for the use of therapeutic modalities and its application to clinical practice. A thorough, well organized textbook relating the science of therapeutic modalities and their practical application is an essential reference for all physical therapy students. The author meets these objectives and provides an exceptional resource for instructors and students alike. This book is also an excellent clinical reference for practicing therapists.
Audience
It is evident from the material and its clinical relevance that the author and long list of contributors bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the book.
Features
In logical order, the foundations for the clinical use of modalities and guidelines for their selection are presented. Subsequent sections cover electrical, thermal, and mechanical modalities as well as light therapy, extracorporeal shock wave therapy, and therapeutic massage. Each chapter addresses the physiologic basis for use, clinical applications, specific techniques of application, and case studies for each therapeutic modality. One chapter specifically presents the role of therapeutic modalities in wound healing. Pedagogic aids particularly useful for instructors and students include a listing of objectives for each chapter, ample figures, photos, and illustrations, chapter summaries, a glossary at the end of each chapter in addition to definitions of terms in the corresponding page margins, and extensive reference lists for each chapter. Of particular utility is the individual lab activity and step-by-step procedure checklist for each modality. A master competency checklist is included to guide and track practice and acquisition of skills. The large number of tables, diagrams, photographs, and illustrations aid the student in understanding sometimes complex material. Some of the more complex illustrations and diagrams, however, could benefit from color to improve the clarity of the information presented.
Assessment
This book is a leader in the field for instruction in the theoretical basis of therapeutic modalities and the acquisition of skills necessary to correctly and safely use modalities clinically. A number of modality textbooks are currently available, but this is more thorough in its coverage. In addition, the laboratory activities and checklists facilitate instruction and guide practice in the psychomotor skills of therapeutic modality application.
