Description
This is a pocket guide for enteral nutrition using best practice recommendations based on ASPEN (American Society for Parenteral Enteral Nutrition) guidelines and other resources using current research. It presents a multidisciplinary, step-by-step approach to evaluate nutrition needs, formula choice, and delivery mechanisms, as well as to troubleshoot complications in adults and pediatric/infants. Each chapter uses tables for quick reference points. There is an ebook version, but it was not available for review. This second edition incorporates the significant advances that have occurred in enteral nutrition since the first edition of 2010. |
Purpose
The purpose is to improve the safety and quality of care for those requiring enteral nutrition. The book implements current research and technology that improve nutrition support, advancing health by improving ordering, administration, and safety. This is a concise reference on the latest research and recommended guidelines to advance safety and efficacy of enteral nutrition. |
Audience
The book was written for multidisciplinary use, from novice to advanced practice. Students and trainees in dietetics, medicine, nursing, and pharmacy will find it a valuable reference. The book meets a need for those involved in enteral nutrition, using a well laid out format to present current best practices and research guidelines to advance enteral nutrition care. The authors include registered dietitians and a PharmD with advanced certifications in clinical nutrition support and pediatrics. The contributors and reviewers are from all medical disciplines. |
Features
The steps for enteral nutrition implementation are well laid out in separate chapters for adults and children/infants. The book covers topics from assessment of needs, to how to select the appropriate product, delivery mechanisms, how to prepare, label, and dispense safely, evaluate complications, and administer medications, as well as home enteral nutrition. Each chapter has tables outlining the material for quick reference. The second edition separates adult recommendations from child/infant recommendations. It also adds chapters on patient selection and preparation, labeling, and dispensing of enteral nutrition. The index is helpful in locating specific topics. |

Assessment
This is a valuable multidisciplinary reference source for enteral nutrition. As research and technology advance, providing updated best practice and evidence-based information is important, making this second edition necessary. The American Society for Parenteral Enteral Nutrition is the leader in advancing the science and practice of nutrition. A limited number of other titles are available, such as Dietitian's Handbook of Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition, 3rd edition, Skipper (Jones & Bartlett, 2012), but it is written for dietitians, not a multidisciplinary team, and it is not as current as this book. Other titles in this field are from enteral formula companies on their specific products. |
