Description
This multimedia resource (textbook and surgical videos) describes selected orthopedic operations for children and adults. |
Purpose
Its purpose is to provide concise but comprehensive information on how and when to perform orthopedic procedures. The authors are all from major orthopedic surgery departments in the U.S. Their objectives are met, for the most part. |
Audience
The primary audience includes orthopedic surgeons and orthopedic residents. |
Features
The procedures represent most orthopedic subspecialties, such as sports medicine, hand and wrist, adult reconstruction, trauma, foot and ankle, spine, and pediatrics. Common or essential procedures are presented for each subspecialty. For instance, in the section on the hand and wrist, some of the topics include carpal tunnel release, trigger finger release, distal radius fracture treatment, and ganglion cyst excision. The first chapter on arthroscopic repair of a partial-thickness rotator calf tear is a new procedure, but not necessarily essential. The print book, if taken alone, does not really flow as an atlas, as the title suggests, although each chapter has sufficient line drawings, photographs, and radiographs. The 70 surgical videos are very well done and are most helpful in further elucidating the surgical operations. |

Assessment
This important landmark work is published by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons primarily for its 17,000-plus fellows and other orthopaedic surgeons worldwide. The surgical videos give the book a new and needed educational dimension, of which other publishers should take note. However, because of the limited number of orthopedic surgical procedures it details, this first edition lacks some of the inclusive and in-depth qualities of such mature works as Campbell's Operative Orthopaedics, now in its 12th edition (Elsevier, 2013), in which almost all the orthopedic operations are described and the originators of the procedures are recognized. That said, I strongly recommend this groundbreaking multimedia resource to all orthopedic surgeons and trainees. It is a must-have reference that should be on the shelves of all medical libraries. |
