Description
This is a comprehensive book covering most major topics in obstetrics and gynecology. Tables, images, and algorithms, when used, are informative. Effective use of headers within each chapter guide readers to content quickly. The online ebook reflects the print content and images without added content. |
Purpose
According to the book, the purpose is to present a comprehensive overview and serve as a resource for consultants, postgraduates (residents), midwives, nurses, and allied health professionals. As such, this book fills a valuable niche and provides information at an appropriate level of detail for those that support and interface with practicing obstetrician/gynecologists. Medical students would be another audience. For residents in training, the book effectively serves as a broad introduction to clinical topics, but books with greater detail on each topic would be necessary adjuncts. |
Audience
The book is directed to specialists and trainees who interact with practicing obstetrician/gynecologists. As such, it achieves its goal. The authors are mainly from Britain and its commonwealth countries. For this reason, some practice patterns described may differ from those in the United States. The authorship represents well-recognized and well-respected international experts in the field. The table of contents is a veritable "Who's Who" in the obstetrics and gynecologic literature. |
Features
This book divides content logically and comprehensively. An initial section presents topics germane to both obstetrics and gynecology. The remaining obstetrical sections cover antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and neonatal care. The gynecologic section begins with content reflecting the most common benign pathologies. Subsequent sections present topics from subspecialties that include urogynecology, reproductive endocrinology, and gynecologic cancer. The book effectively and broadly presents most topics in obstetrics and gynecology in its nearly 900 pages. Moreover, the level of detail suits its target audience. The tables, images, and algorithms are valuable, and more of these would be beneficial in future editions. Because many consultants are asked to participate in care of patients with preoperative conditions or postoperative complications, expansion of this aspect of gynecology might be considered for the second edition. Chapters on prenatal care and benign ovarian pathology would be other valuable additions. |
Assessment
This book is a valuable tool that provides an overview of topics in obstetrics and gynecology for the audience it serves. Most books focus on either obstetrics or gynecology, and this book offers a needed combination of the two. It provides many more topics than Hacker and Moore's Essentials of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 6th edition, Hacker et al. (Elsevier, 2016). Most other combination books are formatted as manuals or handbooks, which fail to provide the needed background discussion of topics. A second edition in the future would be a benefit. |
