Description
This book is a "quick reference guide" for the management of infectious diseases in childcare and school settings. This sixth edition updates the previous version, published in 2019, and cross-checks for consistency with other publications and national guidelines, while adding information about COVID-19 and pandemic preparedness. |
Purpose
The purpose of the book is to serve as "a tool to encourage common understanding among educators, families, and health professionals about infectious diseases" in childcare and school environments. It effectively compiles information of relevance into a practical and actionable form for evaluating both individual and group health concerns. |
Audience
The book is appropriate for its intended audience: educators, childcare health consultants, pediatricians and other health professionals, parents of children in childcare, and schools. The language avoids jargon and overly technical descriptions, making it accessible to non-medical readers. The authors are established and highly respected experts in school health and members of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Council on Early Childhood. |
Features
Chapters 1-4 provide general information on preventing and mitigating infectious diseases in the school environment, including protective measures for staff and students alike. Chapter 5 offers guidance for rapid assessment of ill persons based on clinical signs and symptoms (e.g., cough, rash). Readers can quickly find the most common causes of symptoms, review warning signs for severe disease, decide whether to notify family and/or public health, and consider exclusion if needed. Chapter 6 provides detailed sections on specific diseases (e.g., chickenpox, lice). Some of the material includes concise but highly informative descriptions of the infection, methods of transmission, incubation, and contagious periods. Color photographs, including those of many rashes, augment the text. Of particular practical use is the condition-specific advice on whether other students' families or staff need to be notified of exposure, the need for exclusion from the educational setting, and criteria for safe return. Chapter 7 details particular concerns about child vulnerability and the need for planning in case of outbreaks, epidemics/pandemics, or bioterrorism events. Chapter 8 provides additional resources, advice on cleaning schedules and products, and health forms and sample letters. |
Assessment
This book is an evidence-based, updated, comprehensive, and practical review of infectious disease considerations in the school and childcare environment. The illustrations and carefully considered sections on rapid assessment either by symptom (Chapter 5) or known disease process (Chapter 6), along with resources to assist in appropriate communication with parents, health departments, personal physicians and affected community members, make the book a "must-have" volume that is reasonably priced for any school to have on hand. |
