| This is the sixteenth edition of a guide to the stability and compatibility of intravenous medications that is updated every two to three years. |

Purpose
|
| It is intended as a reference for the safe administration of parenteral medications to patients, covering stability, osmolality, pH, and compatibility of parenteral drugs. Lawrence Trissel does an astonishing job of gathering a colossal amount of drug data and organizing it for quick retrieval in this one-stop resource. |

Audience
|
| This book is specifically targeted at healthcare professionals who practice in either inpatient or ambulatory settings where parenteral drugs will be administered frequently. It is published by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, as credible a source as there is. |

Features
|
| Based on the generic name, each parenteral drug is listed in alphabetical order by sections. The brand name, if the drug is still available as such, is listed under the primary heading "Products" in each monograph as well as the index. Each drug section is broken up into four sets of tables. Table 1 covers "Solution Compatibility," such as the referenced drug placed into sodium chloride 0.9% or dextrose 5%. Table 2 describes the "Additive Compatibility" and evaluates the referenced drug in addition to a second independent drug (example: acyclovir and hydromorphone in one IV bag). Table 3, "Drugs in Syringe Compatibility," discusses whether two drugs drawn up into the same syringe are physically stable. Finally, Table 4, "Y-Site Injection Compatibility," states whether two drugs can be administered safely without precipitation into an intravenous access port. Each of the tables describing compatibility lists the drug, manufacturer, reference source number, and concentration, with additional remarks concerning time and temperature stability. This user-friendly format provides a wealth of data in a layout that makes it easy to retrieve. |

Assessment
|
| Any practicing pharmacists who frequently deal with injectable drugs would be hard pressed to find this amount of information on drug stability/compatibility in one easily retrievable resource without this book. It is the gold standard for this type of information. As healthcare practice changes all the time with the discovery of new drugs and the emergence of new data on existing drugs, references like this must be kept up to date, which justifies this new edition. |
