Description
| This has been the definitive textbook in rheumatology for decades, and the list of contributing authors is suitably impressive. It is a treat to read a book where every chapter is written by people at the very top of their field. The previous edition was published in 2009. |
Purpose
| According to the preface, the aim of this edition is to comprehensively cover rheumatology while reflecting recent changes, especially the advances in molecular medicine and emerging targeted therapies. It also focuses on graphics to improve presentation. This is a classic, and this is a much anticipated update. The chapters are well selected, covering not only aspects of disease and treatment but also focusing on cellular biology and mechanisms of autoimmunity. |
Audience
| Practitioners and trainees in rheumatology are the intended audience. |
Features
| Volume one is especially appreciated for its in-depth coverage of the structure and function of the various aspects of the immune system, the chapter on autoimmunity, and experimental models of arthritis. Also useful is the section on pharmacology that covers everything from steroids to biologics. Volume two covers aspects of diagnosis, pathogenesis, clinical features, and treatment of various rheumatic diseases. |
Assessment
| The ninth edition has many positive changes, including in the presentation, such as color coding of sections and charts and diagrams, which have made the information easier to assimilate. The book also provides up-to-date information while keeping with the traditional feel of previous editions. In times where electronic media have taken over print media, Kelley's still draws readers. It is likely the most definitive rheumatology book not only in the U.S., but also in the rest of the world. |
